There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel building that features many amenities aside from the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight tables.
